Voice charting: say the number

Call out depths and findings while you probe and they land on the chart. Correct yourself out loud. Available in English, French and German.
- Say a number and it fills the site you are on, then the chart moves on by itself.
- Correct yourself the way you would to an assistant: "no, six instead of three".
- Part of a subscription, in a signed in patient chart. The free chart has no microphone.
Turning it on
Open a patient's chart, stay on the current chart tab, and press Voice above it. The space bar does the same thing.
The first press explains what the microphone does and asks you to accept. Your browser then asks for the microphone in its own words. Both happen once.
Speak the language the app is set to. Voice charting runs in English, French and German; in any other language the button is not there at all.
Speaking
Say the measurements as you take them. "Three four two" fills three sites and leaves you on the fourth, exactly as typing three digits would. Name what you find and the chart moves to that row: "bleeding", "plaque", or "no bleeding" for a site with none.
Say the numbers plainly and the rest can be as loose as you like. Hesitations, an "okay" to the patient, a pause to reposition: it is listening for the measurements, not for the conversation.

Depths run from 0 to 16 and are said as whole words: "ten", "fourteen". Teeth are named the same way, in whatever numbering the chart is showing you, so the same tooth is "forty seven" in FDI and "thirty one" in 1-32.
Correcting yourself
Say it however it comes out. "No, six instead of three."
A correction is read as an instruction about what is already on the chart, so it replaces or clears a value rather than adding one. Every measurement on the chart is one you said as a measurement.
If it cannot work out what you meant, nothing changes and the panel tells you so. Say undo, press Ctrl Z, or click the cell and type over it.
What you see while it listens
A panel opens in the middle of the screen, sized to be read with a probe in your hand.
- The big number is the value just written, with the two before it dimmed beside it and the tooth and site named underneath.
- Amber means heard but not written yet, on the chip in the panel and around the cell it is heading for. Nothing amber is in the chart.
- The line along the foot shows what was picked up, or says so when something was refused.
- Pause, Resume and Stop voice sit along the top.
Clicks pass through the panel to the chart behind it, and it never takes the keyboard, so you can type over anything without stopping.

They are ignored while you are typing in a field, so the space bar still types a space in a patient's name. Saying "stop" ends the session, the same as Stop voice on the panel.
The microphone
- It runs only while voice charting is on, and your browser's own recording indicator stays lit the whole time, so the state is visible outside the page.
- Pause stops anything being sent. Stop voice hands the microphone back and the indicator goes out.
- Audio is streamed to OpenAI, the speech transcription provider, to be turned into words. Zermmi keeps no recording and no transcript. OpenAI does not use it to train its models and holds abuse monitoring logs for up to thirty days.
- Anything that is not a measurement is passed on as text so it can be understood. Say the measurements, and keep the patient's name and anything else that identifies them out of what you say aloud while it is running.
- It pauses itself after three minutes without speech and ends the session after twenty minutes, so a microphone left on cannot stay open all afternoon.
- Each session leaves a record that it happened: when, which patient chart, the language, and roughly where from. There is no audio and no transcript in it.
- Declining changes nothing else: charting, the keyboard and the export work as they did. The full account is in the privacy policy.
Good to know
- English, French and German. In any other language the microphone is not offered.
- Furcation is graded I, II and III, so it is clicked or typed rather than spoken. A negative recession, where the gum still sits over the crown rather than back off it, needs the - key: it enters -1.
- One site at a time, in the row you are in, rather than a whole quadrant from one sentence.
- Sessions are counted per day, and the button shows how many are left once voice starts.
